Unseen

Here's a little Bible trivia for you. When you win big on "Jeopardy" because you know the answer to this, remember the church! Jesus told a lot of parables. A lot of stories. What was the shortest parable Jesus told? The Parable of the Leaven (yeast.) The Parable of the Leaven is only one sentence long. "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a woman who took yeast and put it in 3 measures of flour, until it was all raised." God's work is often Unseen. Like yeast, working to raise dough. I got a friend who's big into cooking and baking. She was asked by her niece to make the wedding cake for her wedding. What an honor! What a responsibility! My friend went out and bought a BIG, square cake pan. She wanted to make the base layer of the wedding cake a BIG square. Her niece is a chocolate fan. So she was gonna make the BIG, square base layer as a chocolate cake. Yum! She mixed up a BIG bowl of chocolate cake batter and poured it into the BIG, square cake pan. Into the oven. The house fills with the smell of chocolate cake. Yum! The timer goes, Ding!. Time to take that cake out! Yum! She's got her oven mitts on. Bending over and pulling that nice, warm cake out. Yum! At that moment, she happens to look up. She happens to look up, and see that BIG bowl of sugar. That BIG bowl of sugar, she has forgotten to put into the cake! That BIG, square chocolate cake goes into the garbage can. Cake without (unseen) sugar is Bleh! Bread without (unseen) yeast is Bleh! This is the problem God has with everyone with a belly button. "It's only what I see, that is real." At least that's what we think! But you can't look at a person, and see how much courage they got. You can't look at a person, and see how much hope they got. You can't look at a person, and see how much generosity is in their heart.

For today, as I run here and there, I'm gonna remember Helen Keller, whose eyes didn't work. Helen Keller "saw", "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart." Let me try to look more, with my heart.
