The Remote
When I got to the rehab center, there was a BIG screen TV, right across from my bed. Yikes! The people on there are bigger than I am! Me and TV are like me and junk food. I've had more than my share! But sometimes, after my Sweetie had left for some long-deserved rest, I'd turn on the TV. One of the "bonuses" of this place was having trouble with the TV in your room. I had to ask Maintenance to come twice to fix TV problems. The first time he came, the first thing he says is,

Positive
June 26. It's a Friday. The two-week anniversary of my Fabulous Femur Fracture. Happy Anniversary?!? I had an appointment with the surgeon who put the railroad spike--I mean, "femur nail"- into my leg. To help me recover from my Fabulous Femur Fracture. Calvin the rehab center driver wheels me in my wheelchair, up the ramp of the van. I feel like a package being loaded on the UPS truck. When I get to the doctor's office, my Sweetie meets me. In we go. X-rays. But first, they

Listen
January 8th. It was a Thursday. The forecast was that it was gonna be sunny and pretty warm for January. Maybe even 50 degrees. So Dave the over doer had big plans. I was gonna do church work. And I was gonna get out in the yard and rake up those dead leaves that had blown over from the neighbor's yard. And I was even gonna wash the car. Big plans. Instead, I woke up at 4 am with pain in my gut. It felt like a baseball was on fire, in my gut. Off to the hospital Emergency Roo

Too Busy Being Happy
Good. I'm nuts. But at least I know I'm nuts. One way I'm nuts is, I try so hard to be good. I worry and obsess about the worship service. Because I want the worship service to be good. I worry worry and obsess obsess about the sermon. Because I want the sermon to be good. And I avoid trying so many things, because I'm afraid I won't be good enough. I try so hard to be good, I become hard, instead of becoming good. It was a week ago today. Tina and Gary were coming to visit m

Consider the Flowers
Consider. Today, July 7, is my sister's birthday. Happy Birthday, Dear! On Sunday night, she came to visit. Thank you, Dear! When she came, she brought a bouquet of flowers. This reminded me of when my stepdaughter came to visit at the rehab center. She brought a bouquet of flowers. Both times, my response was, "Flowers?! What good are flowers?! If somebody beings a snack, I can eat the snack. I can't eat flowers! What good are flowers?! If somebody brings a puzzle book, I ca

The Snail
I am thankful to be home from the hospital and the rehab place. And I HATE being so high maintenance! I HATE that my Sweetie has to do so much, while I do so little! I HATE that I can't even go out and bring in the stupid newspaper! Which brings me to the story of The Snail. It was a cold, rainy, March Day. One of those awful damp days where winter says, "Oh no! I ain't letting go yet!" There was a bluejay in the backyard. Standing on the wet grass. Looking for something to e

Star
This was the Children's Sermon I had been planning for July 5. Before my accident. I would give each kid a white star. And I'd hold a star in each of my hands. Then I'd talk about each of us dreams about being a star. Be a Star-win the race. Be a Star-win the contest. Be a Star-everybody's cheering for me. But here's the thing about Stars. At least the Stars up in the sky. Each Star, at least each Star up in the sky, is very far apart from each other. Then I'd stretch out my

Yet Another Weekend Getaway-Part 6
"Easy" You ever see any of those old prison movies? "The Shawshank Redemption" "Escape From Alcatraz" In those old prison movies, the talk among the inmates is, "What're ya in for?" And "When are ya gettin' out?" There's the prison escape attempt. The "break out." And when somebody does get sprung, everybody's happy for them. While also being secretly jealous. Being in rehab is like being in prison. The talk among the inmates---I mean, residents--is "What're ya in for" and "W

Rest. Even under good conditions, I often have trouble sleeping. My sorta, kinda joke sometimes is, "Guess today, I'm gettin' up with Dolly!" I read somewhere that Dolly Parton gets up every day at 3 am. Me too, sometimes. Now I'm in a rehab facility. Part of being here is, I'm supposed to rest. Sleep is healing. Ya ever try to MAKE yourself sleep?! Good luck! Lately, I've been praying on our Gospel Bible reading for this Sunday. It includes that old favorite. Jesus says, "Co

Roller Coaster Day. You ever have a Roller Coaster Day? You're up, then you're down. Just like riding on a Roller Coaster. Yesterday was a Roller Coaster Day. I was sitting in my room, here at the rehab facility. This lady walks in. I kinda sorta but not quite recognize her. She says, "I brought you a visitor. In comes----EMILY! YAHOO!! Emily is a young woman from church. One thing that helps me keep going is thinking of people who are braver than I am. Like EMILY! YAHOO!! Em

Yet Another Weekend Getaway-Part 3
"New" After six days in the hospital, I was transferred to a rehab facility Wednesday night. It was about 8:30 pm. Too late for an official welcome. And the grand tour. A nurse does come in to check me out. It's getting late and later. I encourage my Sweetie to go home."Get some rest!" She's exhausted. Worrying about her crazy husband, who's been in the hospital 4 times in the last 6 months. I've been to this rehab place before. As a pastor, visiting church members. But it's

Yet Another Weekend Getaway-Part 2
When I was laying on the ground after I broke my femur, my first thought was, "This can't be happening to me! This only happens to old people. I'm not old!" Old is a matter of opinion. To the 90-year-old, I'm just a kid. To our granddaughter, I'm a dinosaur. Old or not, I was laying there, unable to move my leg. My second thought was, "You idiot! How could you do such a thing?!" But I've broken sticks on the wall like that before. One of my faults is, I'm human. I don't know

Yet Another Weekend Getaway
June 12. It was a Friday. Friday is trash day in our neighborhood. I had gotten up early. Just before I was gonna get on the stationery bike, I took some trash out to the trash can. By the trash can, there was a long sycamore branch. The thing about sycamore trees is, if any wind blows anywhere within a 100 miles of a sycamore tree, something's gonna fall off that sycamore tree. And so it was. A seven-foot long sycamore branch, laying on the grass. No problem! I'll just break
