Gifts of music are presented in every worship service, throughout the year.  Our vibrant hymns and special choral/instrumental pieces include many genres and are thoughtfully chosen in support of the scripture readings, sermon message, and season.

Year-round choir rehearsals take place directly after worship on Sunday mornings, and we sing through the anthem of the day in the sanctuary choir loft on Sundays prior to worship.  All are welcome to sing regularly or occasionally with our willing, warm-hearted, very worthy choir.

Many gifts, one Spirit!

We genuinely hope to meet you soon!

Meet Kari

Director of Music

Kari grew up in rural LaSalle County, Illinois, and has been a lifelong musician. She attended Grand Ridge Grade School, Ottawa Township High School, the University of Illinois, Parkland College, and Rutgers University. In addition to her formal education, she studied piano, organ, and oboe through private instruction.

Throughout her life, Kari has shared her musical gifts in many houses of worship and truly believes in the impact and enrichment that gifts of music bring to our faith practice.

How We Choose
Our Hymns

Our Director of Music, Kari Kirk, explains her process for selecting hymns for worship.

Selecting music for worship is a prayerful and thoughtful process. First, I pray for guidance, and I read the liturgy/order of worship the pastor has provided for that service. I read the Bible passage(s) and jot down the hymns that come to my mind. Then, I research various resources which specialize in hymnody/music ministry, organized by scripture reference, season in the Christian year, special elements (communion, baptism, etc.) or secular observances which may apply to this service. I spend time at the piano and organ, playing and singing through each selection while considering the message of the service, the accessibility of the lyrics and melodies, and the general appeal. In a typical worship service, we sing three congregational hymns, each serving a unique purpose: -- Opening Hymn: A song of praise that invites us into worship, prepares our hearts to hear God's Word, and often reflects the theme of the Scripture readings. -- Sermon Hymn: A hymn that responds to or reflects on the Scripture and pastoral message, or prepares us for elements of worship such as Communion, prayer, or stewardship. -- Closing Hymn: A joyful expression of thanksgiving that affirms our faith and sends us into the world to live out God's love and serve others. After prayer, reflection, and allowing time for inspiration, I finalize the hymns, prelude, choir anthem, any special music, and postlude. I then play through the entire musical flow of the service to ensure everything works together as a meaningful act of worship. Once I am confident that the music supports the worship experience both spiritually and practically, I share the selections with the pastor, administrative assistant, and altar committee. Music is a wonderful way to glorify God and deepen our worship together.
