Every once in a while, a truck pulls up in front of my neighbor's yard. A man gets out of the truck. He pulls out a really long hose. He sprays who-knows-what all over the grass. He drives away. My neighbor's yard looks like a golf course. Nothing but green. Along comes Hailey the Honeybee, Hailey the Honeybee flies over the grass. Hailey the Honeybee sees nothing but green. Hailey frowns. Then Hailey the Honeybee flies over Dave the Slacker's grass. Hailey the Honeybee looks down. She sees little white dots all over. Weeds. Weeds called clover flowers. Hailey the Honeybee smiles. She dives to get clover pollen. To make clover honey. From the weeds.
Today's Bible reading is about good plants, and the weeds. Of course, I'm one of the good plants. And the weeds are whoever thinks different, or votes different, then I do. But Jesus is like Hailey the Honeybee. I wanna divide the world into "us" versus "them". Jesus loves me. You, I'm not so sure about. But Jesus is like Hailey the Honeybee. He's looking for the flowers of kindness, the flowers of forgiveness, the flowers of generosity. Whether it's among the good, or the weeds, Jesus is looking for the flowers of mercy. Will He find them at my place today?
