Life-or-death

Last night, I was at a church meeting. Somebody shared with me how, years before, the group had almost split because of an argument. An argument over how to load a dishwasher properly. We all know loading the dishwasher is a life-or-death issue. Me, I don't even use the dishwasher. I "have to" (hand) wash every dish that goes into the sink. Right away. I "can't" leave the house without making sure there are no dirty dishes in the sink. If I were killed in a car accident, the first thing the police would do is come and check for dirty dishes in the sink. Another life-or-death issue. At least I know I'm nuts! Churches are frequently a pile of persnickety perfectionists. That includes me, the crabby old minister. Isn't it funny? Isn't it sad? We church folk say we're gathering, in honor of the One. The Lord. The Lord Who prayed we would live as "one." Yet we're always arguing and splitting. Seems like we've forgotten His prayer to we live as "One.". We would rather be right, at least whatever "right" means to us. How to load the dishwasher. Whether or not to even use a dishwasher. Life-or-death issues. Even as He keeps praying, we live as "one." For today, would I rather be right, or be happy? How important is it? Or, as He puts it, "Do you want to be healed?"
